Module 6: Navigating Group Dynamics & Conflict¶
Welcome to Module 6: Navigating Group Dynamics & Conflict - your guide to intentionally navigating group dynamics and conflict in ways that strengthen collaboration, deepen understanding, and improve outcomes.
Rather than avoiding or minimizing tension, this module helps you recognize, interpret, and leverage conflict as a catalyst for learning, alignment, and collective growth. Facilitation is positioned as the leadership skill that transforms challenging group interactions into opportunities for meaningful progress.
Conflict is not a disruption to facilitation — it is the work. When facilitators guide it with intention, it becomes the pathway to stronger systems, deeper trust, and meaningful, sustained change.
Learning Objectives¶
Participants will:
- Analyze group dynamics by identifying patterns of participation, power, and engagement that influence group effectiveness
- Differentiate types of conflict (e.g., productive vs. unproductive, task vs. relational) and explain their impact on group outcomes
- Reframe conflict as an opportunity for learning and growth, applying the principle of “never letting conflict go to waste”
- Apply facilitation strategies and moves (e.g., paraphrasing, probing questions, structuring dialogue) to guide groups through conflict productively
- Maintain a neutral and intentional facilitator stance that supports psychological safety while advancing group thinking
- Facilitate reflection and repair processes that help groups learn from conflict, strengthen relationships, and improve future collaboration
